There is only one thing that matters when looking to hire someone to work on your home and it's the complete opposite of what most do:

WHEN YOU SHOP FOR CHEAP, CHEAP IS WHAT YOU GET
I know, this is going to bother all penny pinchers out there, but it's the honest to God truth when hiring contractors. If you know anyone in the trades, what I want you to do is ask them what they do when/if they hire someone to work on their homes: THEY THROW OUT THE CHEAPEST ESTIMATE!
The reason being: they don't want to be the least expensive because it makes you look like your product/service is cheap or inferior.
You want a company that discloses all charges up front so there are NO surprises along the way. It's much easier for a contractor to start high, assuming worst-case scenario then have to raise prices later due to unexpected things that come up.
